6 Practical Kitchen Counter top Food Compost Bins You Will Love

Practical Kitchen Counter top Food Compost Bin Options

Whether you have a food waste service available to you, or you are composting your vegetable scraps at home, composting is starting to become the norm.  If you live in a city like London, you probably have a local food waste collection service available to you.  If not, then have you consider starting a compost bin at home for your uncooked vegetable and fruit scraps?

Benefits of Composting Your Food

There are countless benefits to the environment when you compost your food waste.  Uncooked organic matter, such as fruit peelings, vegetable scraps and paper based packaging emit a high amount of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere when they start to rot.  When the waste is composted at home or in a composting facility, the emitted gases disperse in smaller quantities over a prolonged period.  In a facility, the gas is sometimes used to generate heat and electricity.

When you compost your fruit and vegetable scraps at home, you are reducing the amount of greenhouse gases being released into the atmosphere. In addition, you are also benefiting from homemade organic matter, which is very rich in nutrients.

The organic matter, which we all know as compost, is fantastic for our gardens and indoor plants.  If you have a vegetable or a flower garden, you will resonate with my sentiments.  There is a different sense of accomplishment when you grow flowers and vegetables in compost that was produced at home.

Using the compost at home means that we no longer have to rely on fertilisers to produce gorgeous flowers or a high yield of vegetables.  It is literally all organic!

Selecting the right Kitchen Counter top Food Compost Bin

To get you started, I have listed below the things to consider when you are purchasing a kitchen counter food compost bin:

  1. Size does matter.  If you have a small kitchen, you do not want a massive compost bin glaring at you every time you walk in. Therefore, pick a bin that will blend well in your kitchen.
  2. How often will you be filling it up? If frequent, then buy a bigger size, if less than two times a week, then you do not need a big one.  If you wait for the big bin to fill up before you can empty it, then it will start to create smelly odours and mould. On average, most households use a 3 litre or a 6 litre kitchen counter compost bin.
  3. Ventilation or filter system.  Food scraps need good ventilation to ensure that if it rots it does not create bad smells.  If you are not planning to empty the bin frequently, then choose an indoor kitchen composter that comes with a carbon or charcoal filter.  The filter will to remove odours so that your kitchen does smell of rotten food all the time.
  4. Easy to clean – go for a caddy that is easy to clean.  Once you have emptied it, give it a good rinse with hot water to remove any lingering food scraps.  This will reduce the chances of any mould and smells.  Look for caddies that are smooth to clean.  Some caddies may look trendy but due to the textured patterns, they end up harbouring germs if not cleaned well.
  5. Secure – make sure that your stylish counter top kitchen compost bin is easy to open.  The lid should be easy to secure and take off when needed.  This will make it easier when you are emptying the bin.  it will also ensure that smells do not constantly leak into the kitchen.

Tip

Get into the habit of emptying and cleaning the counter top bin frequently. By doing so, you will not have to worry about smells or insects hovering around the bin.

Kitchen Counter Food Compost Bin Liners

A number of compostable caddy liners are available to buy on Amazon.  Whilst I tend not to line my bin, you might prefer to line it with a removable bag.  I empty the compost caddy every other day, therefore, it does not make any sense for me to line the compost bin.

However, if you feel that your bin will not fill up quickly, then line it with a compostable liner. Having a liner will make it easier to tie up and dispose once it is full. The advantage is that the bin will need to be washed less frequently.

Most counter top bins are approximately 3 litres in size, therefore when choosing a compostable liner, choose one that is closest to the size of your chosen counter top compost bin.
